Meaning and history

Petco Logo history

Petco was established in 1965 and didn’t have many competitors on the market, so had all the conditions for fast and successful growth. And the company used all the opportunities, growing into the biggest chain, with more than 1,400 locations across both America, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

Apart from foods for pets, medicine, and foods, the stores under the Petco banners sell small pets as well. Although, during the past few years the company started selling more and more online, through its website and mobile apps.

What is Petco?

Petco is retailer of pet care products, which was established in the United States in the middle of the 1960s. The company specialized in the distribution of foods and supplements for pets, along with hygiene and veterinary products, toys, clothing and accessories.

In terms of visual identity, the logo history of Petco can be split into three periods: the very first and the shortest one, from 1974 until 1979, when the company was established under the name UPCO, the longest one — from 1979 to 2020, with a bright red logotype, and the newest, which started in 2020, with a laconic and minimalistic approach to design.

1974 — 1979

The original Petco logotype was not about Petco at all. The badge was composed of two lettering lines: the upper one featured capitalized “UPCO” in an extra-bold sans-serif typeface, while the bottom level boasted a bold narrowed “Animal Supplies Unlimited” in a rounded sans-serif font.

1979 — 1989

The chain was renamed Petco in 1979, and the badge was redrawn in the same year. The new concept was composed of an extra-bold logotype with letters in different heights, decorated by the contoured images of a horse, a cat, and a dog, and underlined by the “Animal Supply Super Markets” uppercase inscription in a traditional sans-serif font.

1989 — 1991

In 1989 the Petco visual identity gets new color: scarlet-red. It is now used for the extra-bold sans-serif logotype, set in the uppercase of a modern rounded font. It is massive and strong, although the softened angles and ends of the bars make it look friendly and welcoming. The logotype was accompanied by a stylized image of a red cat and a blue dog, both figures in black outline.

1991 — 2011

The redesign of 1991 refined the cat and dog image on the Petco logo and placed it to the bottom of the badge, slightly overlapping the letter “O” of the inscription. The whole logo now got a black “Where the pets go” tagline, executed in a rounded typewriter font.

2011 — 2020

In 2011 the massive uppercase logotype was replaced by a clean and stricter inscription in the lowercase. The wordmark was still set in red but got thinner lines, straight cuts of the ends, and cleaned contours. As for the graphical part of the badge, the cat and the dog were left almost untouched and stayed at their place, the bottom right corner. The tagline was also rewritten in the lowercase, with its typeface getting lighter, and the word “Healthy” added to it, in light blue.

2020 — Today

The concept, designed in 2020, is completely different from all previous Petco logos. Today it is a lowercase sans-serif inscription in a modern yet strict and laconic typeface, which is set in a dark blue color on a plain background without any additional details.
